Changing Roles in the Porties Library

A CLASS STORY by Mrs Sander/Mr Letcher’s Year 4/5 Class

There have been some exciting changes in student participation in the library. Students are being progressively trained to scan returned books and to check which books are on hold which gives them a chance to learn new skills and to develop new responsibilities.

As well, there are students who show great prosody: that’s the ability to inflect your voice when reading aloud so that the story is interesting to the listener. Students with prosody are being invited to read recently recommended ATSI (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) books to their peers. As you can see from the photos, other students were enjoying the storytelling. The latest book was called, “It’s Someone’s Land” which was co-authored by Adam Goodes of Sydney Swans fame.

Through this modelling, all students are being encouraged to develop fluency and prosody and improve their reading comprehension so they can have a turn at reading to their peers.

Another new routine is giving students an opportunity to recommend texts which they have enjoyed. Students briefly describe the story and give reasons for why they enjoyed it. Other students are then encouraged to read more widely and to discover authors who are new to them.

We have a lot to look forward to in our library time!
