Fascinating Science Discoveries with Team B

May 31, 2022 | class story

A CLASS STORY from TEAM B (Danielle Butcher Year 1/2)

This term in Team B we have been focusing on different materials in Science. We have been investigating the properties of natural and human-made materials while noticing their appearance, texture and how we can use them.

Did you know that glass is actually made from sand? We found out that human-made materials rely on natural materials while lots of mixing, heating and combining processes happen to make them.

Not all materials have the same properties, some can be flexible, hard, soft, squishy, shiny, fluffy… materials are used for different things in our everyday life!

Nature Joke: What kind of tree can fit into your hand? … A PALM TREE!

We went on a scavenger hunt to find/collect both human-made and natural materials around our classroom and school.

We used the elements of STEAM to design and create our names out of these materials. STEAM stands for “Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths”. All these things were important when we created our names.

Student Responses:

Zarli: I used gumnuts for the dot in “i” in my name, lots of leaves because I could break them easily and bark and sticks because I could fit them in the “z” and “r” in my name.

Zyan: I used sticks because they are strong. I used leaves because I could curve them.

Guisella: I used some twigs and leaves because they were easy to bend and not very hard. I used aloe vera to paint the background a shiny green.

Hunter: I used some rubbish from my recess, gum nuts, leaves and sticks. I could cut the plastic rubbish to suit the shape of my name like the “r” and “u” in my name. I couldn’t use a stick for my “u” because they don’t bend, they just snap.

Michael: I used sticks, leaves, paper and spiky pine needles because they were easy to break into my letters.
