FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW
Earlier this term the Early Years classes participated in an incursion run by Nature Play SA.
Nature Play SA is a not-for-profit organisation whose vision is to “inspire the south australian community to engage and connect children and adults with nature through outdoor learning, play and immersion”.
Miss Emily and Miss Bayly’s classes were up first, with Miss Alana and Mrs Ehlers after Recess, and Miss B and Mrs Clarke after lunch. During each session the children were immersed in a multi-sensory, play-based learning experience that inspired the students creativity and connections with nature.
Across the 90 minute sessions the students participated in 3 different activities. Loose parts play, sensory play and seed bombs.
Loose parts play allowed students to imagine and reimagine design solutions with open-ended materials including different wood pieces for building.
Sensory play allowed the children to touch and explore different mediums and encouraged them to use all their senses.
Seed bombs supported the children to connect to the earth by creating a sunflower bomb that they can plant and grow.
We have such a brief opportunity to pass on to our children our love for this Earth, and to tell our stories.
– Richard Louv, Author of Last Child in the Woods
If you would like to get involved, get muddy, get outside, and experience the fun we had, maybe you might like to consider the Forest Festival they have coming up in April. For more information please visit the Nature Play SA website.
