Class story from Kim Gwatking’s Reception class

Colours in our World

This term in our Visual Arts lessons, we have been learning about ‘Colour Theory’. We have explored choices of colour in famous artworks and discovered how different colours work together to create different effects.

We started by learning about primary colours: red, yellow, and blue. We then had a colour mixing lesson where we explored the primary colours to help us determine the secondary colours: purple, green, orange.

After this, we used our new colour knowledge to create our own colour wheels which we have used to help us as we delve deeper into the world of colour.
We have also learnt about warm colours which evoke feelings of excitement and energy, and cool colours which promote feelings of calmness and serenity. We then explored complementary and analogous colour pairings.

Each week students have had the opportunity to create their own artworks with their new knowledge from that lesson. We are looking forward to our end of term project where we bring all our new knowledge together to create a special piece of artwork.

Patch Theatre Excursion

A wonderful way to celebrate our colourful Art lessons this term was with our Patch Theatre excursion. On Tuesday of week 7 the Receptions and R/1s travelled by bus to the Hopgood theatre at Noarlunga. We watched a show called I Wish… which was an acrobatic adventure show. The show focused on all of the wonderful things we can be made of.

Each character was represented by a different colour and they used clever light props showing us through impressive special effects how we can share our colours (personalities) with each other.

All of the staff and students thoroughly enjoyed the show.

“I liked seeing all the different kinds of colours in the show.” —Marlie
“I liked the show when all the lights turned off and we saw the rainbow lights.” —Ezra
“I liked the rainbow in the show.” —Sadie
