Cup Stacking at Porties

a Class Story by students in 10.1

Competitive Cup Stacking has taken our school by storm this term! Here’s just one class experience:

In weeks 4, 5 and 6 of term 3, our class went into the hall every Thursday to participate in cup-stacking lessons. We would go in and take our seats. Each lesson there would be tables set up for us with timers, mats and cups. (Kayla)

There were 4 people we did cup stacking with; Rachel, Jaydyn, Judi, and Adam. They’re all really fast at stacking. Jaydyn started when he was 6. He is 21 years old right now. One of his scores was  2.98 seconds. There is a special timer and it times you on how long it takes to finish the stack…. (Zahli)

Jaydyn Coggins is a world champion in cup stacking. Jaydyn plays for the Australian Lightning team. (Aria)

They put a video on for us about Jaydyn as a kid and about how he doesn’t like loud sounds so he puts headphones on his head. The video showed us his 3.6.3 stack- when he started it was so fast- it’s like- I blinked and, suddenly, he was done stacking. (Leo)

They brought in Jaydyn’s cup stacking Guinness World Record and still nobody has ever beat it. They also brang in free signed cups so only four people got one. (Zahli)

Some of the stacks we were learning were 3-3-3  3-6-3, the cycle was a 3-6-3 6-6 -1-10-1. (Daisy)

When we are doing cup stacking we have this mat and timer that will make it stick to the table and not bounce because if you are too hard with the cups you can make it bounce and that is not good because you will have to start over and over again. (Chloe)

It was good fun and I liked it. The thing I did not like was when the cups would fly away when you tried to do it – that made me a little frustrated….  (Aleighya)

It was fun watching Jaydyn cup stack but when I tried, it was a lot harder than he made it look. I was getting a bit frustrated because I was trying to do it as fast as him but I couldn’t. I liked it when I raced my friends… (Calvin)

I felt that my brain was getting exercise from learning and I always looked forward to a new thing to do every week. I learnt that when you practice this, you get way better. And when you fumble you don’t give up. (Zac)

….I think it was a good way to teach me NOT to rage and to just have fun and not give up!!! I like how they also didn’t put much pressure on anyone and started off by just stacking WITHOUT the timer. I think I’d like to do it again, or have a similar experience to it, because I had a lot of fun. (Macy)

When we started doing it (the cup- stacking), I was happy and excited that we got to do something fun and now I do the after school training so I can practice and get better and have more things to do that I like and so I get better at it. (Jack)

I think cup stacking was pretty fun but I feel like they were teaching us things that were hard for some people. Some people were unstacking their cups way too fast and made their cups go all over the floor, but overall it was really fun. (Zarli)

I think that the cup stacking was really fun. We learnt the 3 3 3  and 3 6 3. The 3 3 3 was really easy once we got the hang of it. The 3 6 3 was a little bit harder but it still was easy. (Savannah)

Personally, I really enjoyed the stacking lessons and the lightning AUS team. It was an opportunity to learn a new thing out of the ordinary in school; it was a cool experience and a fun thing to do! (Kayla)

Personally I thought I was pretty good until I saw some other people’s scores and they got 4 seconds, so I kept going and I got 4 seconds and I felt pretty good. (Elyse)

The best bit was when you got a new record and when you got (your name written) on the board. I did not like it when I did not do good at all or when you had a fumble. But I did not give up and kept trying. (Dale)

I felt really happy because Jaydyn is really nice. He doesn’t like loud sounds like me.  IT WAS SO FUN….  Jaydyn travels all around the world and he was on “Australia’s Got Talent”. (Indi)

It was fun and easy to learn. I am going to keep practicing and I liked it. (Eliot)

When I was doing cup stacking, I felt happy and doing it was very fun. I got to improve my time every time I did it and I got to stand with my friends and watch them improve their time too. (Madison)

We were all challenged by learning something brand new to us. Cup-stacking is also known for training both sides of our brains which we know is both very difficult and also extremely good for us. Some attributes we tried to use were; patience, persistence and encouraging others.
