Starting School
In 2014 the DECD admission policy for children starting school will change. From 2014 all children will start preschool and school on the same day, the first day of Term 1. This will bring South Australia into line with all other states and will ensure that all children receive four terms of preschool and four terms of Reception.

If your child turns four before May 1, they will start preschool on the first day of Term One in that year. If your child turns four on or after May 1, they will start preschool on the first day of Term One the following year. If your child turns five before May 1, they will start school on the first day of Term One in that year. If your child turns five on or after May 1, they will start school on the first day of Term One the following year.

In South Australia, it's compulsory for children to be enrolled in primary school by their sixth birthday. Currently, most students in South Australia start school at age five. Use the Same First Day calculator to find out when your child will start primary school.
